I'm way behind!

I've had some neck issues lately, mainly due to being uber-tight.  I got a massage on Tuesday which helped a bit, and I'm not going to lie...I love Salonpas.  Those are helping me feel a lot better.  I was skeptical when I first saw the commercials, but the Japanese have nailed this one.  They work way better than Icy Hot or Bengay.  I'm a believer.

So over the past week, I'd basically been resting from weights and hitting cardio.  Sweating can help loosen you up, too, and few better ways than running in the summer.

Yesterday, I finally lifted again.  We trained at Brian's and focused on incline log press.  I worked up to 315 lbs, and here is a video of that.

Hoping to go hard on Saturday, so check back!  Thanks for reading!

Squat day...HEAVY!

It has been a few weeks since we've really squatted.  Brian and I went fairly heavy today with my top set at 550.  After that, I hit a back-off on 225 x 10 which really burned, to finish that off.

We're revamping our training right now to be more gym-lift-centric, with fewer strongman events.  Today, the closest we came to an event was incline pressing the log, and we stayed light there.

We finished off with some super-sets of band hip-thrusts, with C/J of the 50 lb. medicine ball for 15 reps on each...this is tough!

Here is a video of the top lift on squat:

Deadlift, supersets

Today was about deadlift.  We got loose on zercher squat, then had an overhand axle deadlift competition...Dave got schooled! :)  Then we hit regular deadlift where I worked up to 550.  It came off the ground easily and was a smooth lockout which means I'm coming along.  Shout-out to Nate who hit 350, eclipsing Nathaniel's old high-schooler record of 305, and he beat Thayne, too, so I think there's some work to be done!

No video yesterday, but here is the workout:

Shoulder workout

I've had some nagging shoulders lately.  They aren't nearly as bad as two years ago, but they aren't 100%.  Yesterday was designed to put some pressure on them, but to also stretch them out.  The thing about impingement is that it really demands a lot of attention, and not just stretching.  I can feel the ball-in-socket wanting pressure to put it in the right place, but true overhead can hurt too much.  Incline bench is a nice balance between getting the pressure, and not putting the shoulder in too taxing of a position that is really going to make me sore.

I ended up working up to 310 on incline.  It felt pretty good given that I haven't performed this lift in quite a while.  Here is a real quick vid of that:

We hit some pretty tough supersets on back, shoulders and abs, as well.  I'm nice and sore today!

Here is the workout:

Weight Reps
Shoulder aux work (cord) 25 360
Incline bench 45 40
135 8
185 6
235 5
275 3

Shoulder superset 20 200
20 200
Bent row superset 35 100
Abs weighted 110 15

Sandbag carry and load

Just to catch-up a bit, Tuesday was zercher squats along with deadlift with bands up to 300 for speed.

Today was event...no "s".  We hit sandbag pretty hard.  I did about 7 reps on the 150 bag then another 7 on the 260 pounder.  After that, I did two sets of carry and load as shown below:

That is it for today.  I need to drink more in the summer as I was dehydrated today and flat ran out of juice after this set of carry and load!

Catching up

After the show, I took about a week off...

Last Saturday we got together and had about 8 people working on the yoke.  I did 705 easier and faster than I did at the show, which makes me really mad - I should have done better at the competition!

6 sets of yoke, up to 705
2 sets of farmers on 135 per hand (hands still hurt!)
4 sets of log press, going for volume up to 150 lbs.

Tuesday was all about pressing:

6 sets of rack pressing using the log up to 200 lbs.
4 sets of seated rack pressing from the chin up to 235 lbs.
A burnout set of 80 lb. kettle bell presses, standing
Some minor shoulder auxiliary work

Today the plan is to hit sandbag hard.  We're going to load, carry, run and all that fun stuff, so I'll report on that later today or tomorrow.
